エヴァン・ハンター（エド・マクベイン）が1974年に発表した『黄金の街』（邦訳版は1979年12月31日奥付）。ハンターがジャズピアニストのジョン・メヘガンに長期取材をおこない、ジャズと人間模様をこってりと描いた2段組400ページ超の大著。ジャズ小説の今昔という観点で、ジェイク・ラマーのジャズ・ノワール『ヴァイパーズ・ドリーム』（2021年）と読み比べてみるのも面白いと思う。

本書の鮮やかなカバーイラストレーションが永井博の手によるもので驚いた。永井氏の最初期の作品集であり、大瀧詠一が文章を担当したイラストブック『A LONG VACATION artback』と同年の仕事ということになる。
