The reason they don't want you to see this is because it reveals the artifice of the entire affair. The institution does not exist for your benefit, you exist for *its* benefit. Vance has no nature - he is all artifice. Brightish with little instinctive cunning, he is studiedly evil. He understands the difference and chooses malice deliberately.
