Locally acquired ascariasis (an intestinal worm infection) is vary rare in Canada, but it can occur.

We report on a locally acquired case from Northern Ontario in @CMAJ.

Great work by Dr. Foote.

Next? Things like Toxoplasmosis, Cryptosporidiosis, Ascariasis, Free-living amebic infections- a rare but dangerous brain infection found in warm freshwater…. Chagas Disease.. all the other parasitic infections the lab kept track of.
DOGE axed the CDC team that tracks cyclospora. Now 1000s are sick, restaurants & hospitals scrambling. What's next?

“Cyclospora is just one piece. It's making the news right now, but there are other, more dangerous pathogens.”

The CDC Has a Cyclospora Lab. DOGE Downsized It Last Year
“Based on simple math, these outbreak responses—which require rapid, timely responses—are going to be greatly diminished,” the former CDC lab director tells WIRED.

As a scuba diver I've travelled all over and variously had shigella, salmonella, ascariasis, giardiasis...all kinds of little fellow travellers. This isn't nearly as nasty as those, but I'm not feeling good at all. /Whinge

You’re basically right, but b/c I don’t want you hearing a dumb “gotcha” in future conversations: there are formulations of ivermectin approved for human use…against some parasites. (Scabies, ascariasis…) It’s just that for treating or preventing covid, it’s no more useful than, say, chemotherapy.

What are the world’s deadliest animals? Great @ourworldindata.org chart giving a sense of magnitudes of numbers of humans killed by different animals in 2023. Only mosquitoes beat humans in their deadliness!

Russian outbreak of infection with multiple parasitic flukes and worms blamed on North Korean migrants. If true, this suggests that population health in North Korea is really, really bad.
Surge in Parasite Infections in Small Russian Coal Town Blamed on Influx of North Korean Workers

Ivermectin was approved for human use in 1987 [10]. It is an anti-parasitic treatment for infestations, including head lice, scabies, river blindness (onchocerciasis), strongyloidiasis, trichuriasis, ascariasis, and lymphatic filariasis. I think MAGA treats their head lice and scabies.

Despite its rarity, gastric ascariasis—caused by the parasitic roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides—can cause various non-specific yet distressing GI symptoms and should be considered in those with risk factors for helminthic infections. #ASMCaseReports: asm.social/2Ru

#OTILT Ascariasis is a roundworm infection and the most common human parasitic infection. An adult Ascaris worm can live about 1-2 years in the small intestine and lay up to 250,000 eggs per day, which can be observed in the patient’s stool to confirm Ascaris infection.
