An ancient couple, cracked, dried, empty in their sad decay; they moved some time ago — found themselves inhabiting a land that bore the signs of ancient elements (with rifts and bleached dry deserts). And clapping derelict gums together, leapt they in the heavy air and cried: “America the young, the pure, the free!” (first published in "A Secret Tear" [1976, tapocketa press])

You can almost hear the wheezing of the church’s organ as the sunset glows above the coast. And a hundred grey-chinned French nuns clap their hands in time to the heartbeat of a dying cow (hear the throbbing of its pulse pumping blood into the void). And the temples of the world are there in every bomb that falls and hand that’s raised; and the trees watch, and weep their tears of aching impotence, and raise their limbs to heaven in the hope that clouds may hide the sun from man lest he should reach to snuff it in his righteous might. like the feeling of sudden nothing when a tube train leaves the platform and you stand too close to the edge i stand left by you and oh i am whitewashed oak- panelling in a church. grey-velvet eyes and geese fly south from my heart honking geese honking in a v like geese in a grey- velvet sky honk gaggling southwards on the tube home.
