Cheap fixes that help small sites a lot: rate limit at the proxy by IP range, serve a cached static page to anything without cookies, and block the worst ASNs outright. Not perfect, but it can cut the bill without a full-time admin.

tbh if you don't need to get anything from a server hosted on one of these ASNs (large IP blocks), block Google, DigitalOcean, Oracle, Tencent, Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook. 99% of your issues vanish over night

Raw logs beat dashboards for exactly this reason — aggregations hide the weird. One addition: diff this week's auth failures against last week's. New usernames or new source ASNs in the failures are usually the first sign of password spraying, days before alerts fire.

Also I wasn't exactly right ovh is where the majority of my traffic comes from but the huge spike is a bunch of different asns and ips aren't reused enough for crowdsec to bother banning, which I guess made it eat a ton of ram and actually cause part of the problem lol

What's cooler is the backend: a blocklist of a bunch of ASNs that operate AI bots, I love hosting my stuff on the internet.

The site actively drops traffic from specific datacenter ASNs known for automated scraping and botnets. Tor and commercial VPNs are totally fine, but if your exit node is a cloud provider IP, the WAF will block it by design.
