In 1750, La Galga, a 50-gun Spanish frigate commanded by the Irishman Daniel Huoni ran aground on the island of Assateague, just off the Maryland-Virginia coast. According to legend, a number of horses swam to the shore and settled on the island. They are today known as the Chincoteague ponies.

I went beach camping in the fall of 1993 on Assateague Island surrounded by wild horses who live there. We could hear them chuffing and whinnying all night. It was magical.

"Three minutes later, she came to the traffic circle at the head of the parking lot. She rounded it and took the walkway over the small dunes out onto the beach. When she saw the shoreline, she turned left up the beach and even deeper into the fog."

On this day my parents and I went to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. We saw the Assateague Island Lighthouse up close. We also saw ponies, the beach, egrets and a heron.
I am looking forward to what is next on this vacation.
