This is super easy actually! Buy some cheap old Varney, Lifelike, Athearn, Walthers, or other 40' tank car model. Then use the frame from it. Then buy ladders from Central Valley

So… new locomotive is completely kaput but thankfully its an old athearn blue box so replacement parts should be easy to find.

New project loco has arrived!
This is a vintage Lionel HO Virginian rectifier, which runs on an Athearn GP9 drive.
Since there's some heat damage and a few bits of paint missing, I see that as an excuse to customize this into a Muskingum Electric locomotive!

This older Athearn HO trainset is kind of the platonic ideal for what a train set should be:
-Accurate, powerful, colorful locomotive
-Gondola to put stuff in
-Boxcar (colorful)
-Flatcar with vehicle load you can play with off layout (in the tub, maybe?)
-Colorful caboose
