Mosler had little reason to fear the vault would be breached because four large Mosler vaults installed in the Teikoku Bank in Hiroshima survived the first atomic bombing on August 6, 1945, a fact Mosler crowed about beginning in 1946 (and which some US banks with Mosler vaults advertised as well).
A copy of a May 22, 1950, letter from the manager of the Hiroshima branch of The Teikokou Bank to the Mosler Safe Company (an ink stamp on the letter indicates it was received at Mosler in Hamilton, Ohio, on June 3, 1950 at 10:17 AM). "The Teikoku Bank Limited Kawayacho, Hiroshima Japan May 22, 1950 Sir, We consider it our great honour to inform you that The Teikoku Bank, the successor to the Mitsui Bank, had in 1925 when its Hiroshima branch was newly built dared to set two vault doors made by your Hamilton Factory. As you know in 1945 the Atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima, and the whole city was destroyed and thousands of citizens lost their precious lives. And our building, the best artistic one in Hiroshima, was also destroyed. However it was our great luck to find that though the surface of the vault doors was heavily damaged, its contents were not affected at all and the cash and important documents were perfectly saved. The superiority of your goods is completely verified as truly told to the whole world in the American Bankers [sic], the July 13th issue of 1946. Your products were admired for being stronger than the atomic bomb. Since then about five years have elapsed. The building and doors of the vault have been completely repaired and we have started our business on the first of the month. Recently many tourists have come to see our building and when we show them your vault we proudly explain to them how strong they were against the atomic explosion. We hereby wish to have a letter of congratulations and some souvenir to celebrate our opening business at out old office. We shall appreciate it as our utmost honour, and we believe it will do much to keep and promote a good will relation for the long future. Yours very faithfully, The Teikoku Bank Limited T. [illegible signature] Manager, Hiroshima Branch" A black and white newspaper advertisement from Farmers State Bank with the headline, "The Blast and Heat of the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima Did Not Destroy The Vaults of the Teikoku Bank." The advertisement features three black and white photographs, one of the heavily damaged exterior of the Teikoku Bank and two of the Mosler vaults and a vault door. Additional copy includes, "Bank With Safety" and "Dispel Your Fears and Deposit Your Valuables At This Bank!" An advertisement for the Mosler Safe Company printed in National Geographic and headlined, "What name will you find on ..." Below this are six numbered black and white photographs in two columns: "1. ... the United States Gold Storage Vaults at Fort Knox, Kentucky? 2. ...the 50-ton safe that guards the original Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights? 3. ... the famous bank vaults that withstood the Atomic Bomb at Hiroshima? 4. ... the protective equipment in 80% of leading U.S. banks, and the majority of Federal Reserve Banks? 5. ... the famous record safe that has never failed to protect the vital records of businessmen from fire? 6. ... the famous armored steel money safes that burglars all over America have found 'too tough' to crack?" The copy at the bottom reads, "The answer is The Mosler Safe Company, with factories in Hamilton, Ohio. Since 1848 the world's largest builders of safes and bank vaults."

Not the results of this test (as far as I know), but definitely the fact that their vaults installed in the Teikoku Bank in Hiroshima (and the contents therein) survived the first atomic attack intact (see this write-up by @conelrad6401240.bsky.social: conelrad.blogspot.com/2010/08/unbr...).

One from the vaults! The Day the Sky Exploded (1958) originally titled La morte viene dallo spazio -  Death Comes From Space - was the very first science fiction movie made by Italy and tells the tale of an accident with an atomic rocket which sends a massive horde of asteroids towards the earth!

You have to admire his technique, and commitment. He dolly vaults into a frog hop. This is where it gets impressive, he realized his takeoff was low and went for the high degree of difficulty atomic face drop into the nose slide. He held that catatonic pose through the slide for some big points. 🤕

briefly: alternate history where cheap nuclear fusion came to being in the 1950s and all the atomic age optimism of the time essentially came true for several decades until 2077 when us and china exchange nukes and then it's 150-250 years later and ppl start coming out of vaults into the wasteland

However, the unfinished construction of infrastructure required for the nuclear mission raises questions about whether the flight actually contained nuclear weapons, as headlines suggested. Nonetheless, if US nuclear weapons were not yet stored at Lakenheath at the time of publication in March 2026, we estimate that approximately 20 weapons will be stored at Lakenheath upon completion of the requisite security infrastructure. If already deployed to Lakenheath, that would raise the number of US nuclear weapons in Europe to an estimated 120 bombs."
