There is an intimacy to live theater that feels increasingly precious as we all drift further into atomization and loneliness. Theater is the antidote. Art is the antidote. Words, beautifully spoken, and the emotion they evoke, will always be the antidote.
If you want to honor the memory of Patrick Stewart, go see some live theater this weekend. I don’t care where you live, there is live theater within an hour of your house. Find it, support it, love it. That’s what Sir Patrick would’ve wanted.

Part of it is how tied to the monetization of our hobbies the way so many have done in our generation. It burns us out to always be "on", but the other part of it is the atomization of the community across sites and the repeated forced relocations.

I think I could write a book about how AI has accelerated the atomization of the person at this rate. We are quickly moving past limited shared experiences to any experience at all. Humanity cannot be allowed to interfere with the line going up.
As a public speaker, fuck this entirely. Fuck this on a thousand different levels. Kill it with fire

spent last night giving out candy at my parents' house and was all ready to have some sad take about The Death of Trick or Treating because of social atomization and car culture but then I overheard a kid mentioning that they were all skipping my block because someone was giving out toothbrushes

Yeah uh...they...definitely did. This is...atomization territory.

On the long term, it be possible, they will be back being of a micro-subculture of fascist weirdo living on their own fantasy and islands of power. People and normies will just feel abjection toward them and their values. They will isolate even more. Total atomization [in respect of the TOS].

And California's legislature is infamously too small!

(This is separate from its municipal atomization issue)

much like how social media and downstream effects of covid have seemingly served to actually increase social atomization, i feel like that's what LLMs are doing to coding and math and such. why would i bother writing an article about my shader toolchain, or my rendergraph, or even my ocean?

It does. I would also say that things like discord have reshaped what we consider forums to be. The benefits of discord are diminished by the atomization of the community. Instead of a large space to meet and share it's thousands of smaller "private" spaces.

There is no denying that employment has gotten way more precarious but even in pre-Great Recession times, other than a 9-11 bump, volunteer orgs have been struggling. Putnam’s Bowling Alone describes the atomization resulting in the hollowing out of civic institutions.

In my view, the expectation that the cost of labor should rise while the price of goods should fall is a product of cultural isolation and atomization. It is a form of alienation that forgets that food, goods and services are actually created and performed by people who also do labor.
There’s a lot of glee left-of-center because they feel like they’ve unearthed this powerful new weapon of broad-based anger about prices, but no one is thinking about the long-term consequences of telling everyone that their main political demand should be “every item cheaper.”

Ignore the polls. Turn out. Polls are compromised by social disintermediation and atomization.

and indeed, the era of relatively peaceful early capitalism was quickly followed by an era of an increasingly erratic, more and more brutal nature, in which, for the broad masses, the horrors of oppression, division, alienation, atomization, diversion and delusion became the norm.

We're just not going to know a lot of people who are important to someone else. The idea of everyone knowing a person or a song or a film is far less of a thing than it was pre-2000 due to the atomization of culture into all those microgroups.

Culture? What's that?

Culture requires solidarity, which is in direct opposition to the atomization our current society forces upon us, at scale.

Is it…parasocial fake friend simulating shit? Is that what’s going on? Like, cashing in on atomization and the loneliness crisis?

does anyone have good recommendations on books/essays on the atomization of culture in the last decade? it’s a topic i’d love to read more about
