What Looker did was separate the semantic layer and bi offering in a way that was loosely coupled. AtScale founded in 2013 was a universal semantic layer and Aginity had similar offering in 2018. Both were headless with no BI offering. Did anyone think of dbt as semantic before acquiring Transform?

Ooh thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Current list is not too long but cube are on it (cc @jayatillake.bsky.social) but also AtScale and dbt although being on core makes it hard. There's one more I can't remember at the moment.

Yes that seems right. Other tools could have used LookML, but it was still mostly used for their BI.
AtScale was big deployment targeted at enterprise buyers. They're probably the industry leader with insurgents being GoodData and Cube. I never hear positive things about dbt sl, but that's me.

They invented a new data modeling language, no? Similar to MDX/DAX, but one that works declaratively to define metrics even outside the product only. I have never used or seen AtScale too much, not sure why, but maybe because it's not OSS. How is the dbt SL today? I haven't followed through.
