Look at this giant Swamp Lily was longer than I am tall, and the bloom head on the end was as big as both fists put together! It looked like something from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. To me it has a pleasant scent. Smells similar to gardenias. #plants #garden #flowers

Other names are Giant Red Amazon Lily, Swamp Lily, Spider Lily and Giant Red Asian Lily.
it had the longest flower stem like a deep purple snake 🐍 maybe it’ll be open tomorrow.

Another angle of long purple stems with white flowers.

“The Queen Emma spider lily (Crinum augustum 'Queen Emma') is a large tropical perennial plant known for its dramatic dark burgundy foliage and fragrant, spidery white and purple flowers”

“The Queen Emma Crinum or Red Amazon Lily is a highly sought after hybrid cross.

It is an Asian type of Crinum LiLY that grows over 6 feet tall, and has attractive large broad strapped leaves in an unusual leaf color of olive/burgundy/black. Queen Emma produces a large, long lasting bloom head of pink and white, thin, spider-like petals, decorated with long yellow pollen tipped stamens atop a thick, long arched stem makes a grand and dramatic statement in the Tropical to Sub-Tropical landscape.”

I find myself obsessing over why Cicero was omitted from the summa viri in the Forum Augustum. Just the kind of procrastion I DO NOT NEED with a daily target of 1k.

Haud prorsus panem et circenses.

Phil Hands︱Trump can still stage the spectacle, but the pantry politics are brutal. When bread itself is unaffordable, the circus stops looking like distraction and starts looking like contempt. 🍞🎪🥊 #PhilHands #Trump #UFC

Phil Hands editorial cartoon showing Donald Trump as a Roman emperor standing in a balcony draped with purple curtains above a blue sign reading “TRUMP.” Below him, two battered bare-chested fighters square off in an arena; one has “UFC” written on his shorts. In the stands, one spectator says, “I get the feeling he’s trying to placate us with bread and circuses.” Another replies, “Have you seen the price of bread?” The cartoon is signed “Phil Hands, Wisconsin State Journal 2026.”

Latin — Juvenal, Satire X, lines 73-81:

sed quid
turba Remi? sequitur fortunam, ut semper, et odit
damnatos. idem populus, si Nortia Tusco
favisset, si oppressa foret secura senectus
principis, hac ipsa Seianum diceret hora
Augustum. iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli
vendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim
imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se
continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat,
panem et circenses.

Plain English rendering:

But what of Remus’s mob? As always, it follows fortune and hates the condemned. That same people, if Nortia had favoured the Etruscan, if the emperor’s unsuspecting old age had been snuffed out, would at that very hour have called Sejanus “Augustus.” Long ago, ever since we stopped selling our votes to anyone, the people cast off its cares; for the people that once gave command, fasces, legions, everything, now holds itself in check and anxiously hopes for only two things: bread and circuses.

The Roman practice behind it was tied to the grain dole/food supply, not artisanal loaves on a shelf. So: the original phrase does say “bread” but the social-policy reality was closer to subsidized or distributed grain. 🍞

Plate 4
Botanical illustrators working in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries devoted themselves to the medicinal qualities of plants and sought to render plant structure and function as precisely as they could. Later, European explorers brought specimens back from exotic locales, and artists carefully reproduced them for an audience fascinated by new discoveries. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, artists had shifted their emphasis from scientific illustration to the innate beauty of the plant or flower. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is fortunate to possess an impressive collection of more than 2,000 botanical prints and drawings.

Many things about Trumpism are disgusting, but there’s a specific kind of abject ecstacy in Trumpolatry that is really repulsive. “It’s like something from Tacitus,” I always think. Today I ran across the quote I’d been not-quite remembering.

1/x

clamor vocesque vulgi ex more adulandi nimiae et falsae: quasi dictatorem Caesarem aut imperatorem Augustum prosequerentur, ita studiis votisque certabant, nec metu aut amore, sed ex libidine servitii.

—Tacitus, Historiae 1.90

“The shouting and the slogans of the crowd were over-the-top and dishonest—as if they were honoring the dictator Julius or the emperor Augustus. They were competing with worship and prayers not from fear or love, but from the lust of servitude.”
