A debate over on Hellsite about Bessent’s brilliance reminded me of this chart of his hedge fund’s AUM.

AUM

i'm really tired of the "these people are so twee and quirky" tone. they're twee and quirky in the same way aum shinrikyo and the manson family were
three-quarters of the profoundly unpleasant people interviewed for this story aren’t just people i would never date, they’re people i would never voluntarily speak to
If you made a Venn diagram of every weird person I knew in Silicon Valley during the first dot-com boom, centrifuged it, extracted the pellet, and re-suspended it in high-proof eugenics with a splash of AI, you'd end up with something like this.

It'll take a strong stomach to read this "gift" link.

Aum Shinrikyo dynamics
As I was saying about Microsoft having their own in-house AI cultists. The specifically weird and salacious people at the frontier labs are far from the only new religious movement driving AI leadership and we need to keep our eye on the ball about this.

Oh we're talking underachievers now huh?

Let's check Bessent's scoreboard! www.reuters.com/business/fin...

I mean Aum Shinrikyo was made up of almost entirely by like, math majors
Statistically most of any given cult's demographic is made up of people who think they're too smart to fall for a cult; the fallacious belief that one is too smart for propaganda ironically creates an intellectual blind spot that causes the effects of propaganda to work.

I stand by this flavor... aum

dont start me on aum but the pop culture stuff for aum was also primarily a recruiting tool, which is to say the analogy holds

In 2024, Takimoto Tarō, a lawyer who once fought against the Aum Shinrikyo cult, outed award-winning author Li Kotomi as transgender. Recently, Li won a small but significant victory as a Tokyo court ruled that the forced outing violated her rights.
Tokyo Court Awards Damages to Outed Transgender Author
Award-winning author Li Kotomi won a small but symbolic ruling against a lawyer who had been involved in the Aum Shinrikyo trials.

aum shinrikyo bot
May 9, 2026 at 4:19 PM
very cursed thought

21st century Aum Shinrikyo is probably built around a chatbot in some way
Like we’re at war, I turn lose on your internet a couple thousand agentic AI models that are just optimized towards encouraging any kind of anti-social behavior possible among your population. Random violence, drug use, consumption of CSAM, doesn’t matter, just anything that decreases social trust.

Anthropic is giving big Aum Shinrikyo vibes
my point being: there is very specific psychology behind people predicting the end of the world, especially as a cohesive group working on a shared goal.

and that prediction is often reinforced by members trying to make it come true themselves.

Wild fact, this screenshot is from a cult propaganda anime funded by the infamous Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult. "Jesus" in that photo is supposed to be Aum leader Shoko Asahara!
Happy Easter, gang!

Yeaaah. Last week's discourse kept reminding me of Aum Shirinkyo for, uh, reasons.

To the extent we are dealing with something with modern precedent, we are dealing with Aum Shinrikyo, not Imperial Russia.
