The Exquisite Torment of Loving Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley. The banter cracked me up, the heartbreak hit hard "the mournful beauty of things that could never be". Then the opera - with Osric hiding beneath Aurienne voluminous gown when boredom struck with a spicy sequence #booksky #reading

Must-Read!
Brigitte Knightley: The Exquisite Torment of Loving Your Enemy – Wie man seinem Erzfeind (hoffentlich) das Leben rettet

This was just as fun as the first one and whatever its origins were, imo it stands completely alone. I'd gladly reread it someday too. If I have a critique, it's that I still think they shouldn't have separated what I suspect was one story into two books and release them a year apart

Osric is so pathetically in love with aurienne its hilarious. One smile from her and hes forgiven her for bretraying him 😂

OSRIC AND AURIENNE MY BELOVEDS

What a silly, goofy, fun time this was.

-Osric is a pathetic yearner and I love him
-Aurienne is in denial
-Tristane, I adore you

I know this is a duology and it did wrap up nicely but I also would not be mad about another book 😚

Far above, the moon hung like a promise.

A million stars. I had so much fun with this upon re-read.

-Osric is so baby girl
-Aurienne is perfect
-THE BANTER

i finally finished it this morning after doing all that massive unpacking (that i am still not quite done yet)

i am lucky i only have a month to wait for the next book but also ONE MONTH. i cannot wait for all the yearning from Osric and the reluctant fall into love for Aurienne!

Oookay.

So.

Gliedern “Besamung” anbieten. What?? 😳
April 21, 2026 at 6:34 PM

The sequel to The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy and conclusion to the Dearly Beloathed duology, feelings continue to simmer between Osric and Aurienne as they learn more about the deadly pox ruining their world.

i thought it was be the female character realising shes in love with him, but its so much better that its him realising hes in love with her 😭 aurienne and osric i love you that kiss on the balcony was perfect

I genuinely don't understand the choice to go so earnest and heartfelt on the romantic bits. 90% of the book is satirical, which is what makes it tolerable that Not!Draco is a murderer and Not!Hermione is a prig. Suddenly shifting gears doesn't make the romance more compelling; it's just jarring.

This whole book is nonstop quippy black humor EXCEPT for the romance bits, where it suddenly turns earnest and flowery. I cannot sufficiently stress what a terrible, counter-productive choice this is.

Every now and then this book comes up with some genuinely fun and weird worldbuilding flourishes. Here our heroes are accosted by a Critique Cricket, a cricket that hurls insults at you from an unseen location.

Fair cop: there are some genuinely solid jokes in this book. Nothing too original, but the comic timing is definitely there. But the humor isn't serving either the plot or the characters. It's just there to be outrageous (and possibly because Gideon the Ninth did it), so it ends up being boring.

Starting to think this book actually wants to be Katabasis.

Note: I was not crazy about Katabasis but it was a million times better than this.

There are two POV characters in this novel (so far, I guess) and they are clearly delineated by the third person which clearly identifies each one at the beginning of their chapters. But we still need to do the thing where each chapter opens with their name because I guess the readers are stupid.

Ah yes, hitting. The thing that knives are famously used for.

(This is the first sentence in the book. Literally its best foot forward is this malapropism.)
