Here's the thing: most books that are banned don't make the lists that get circulated each #BannedBooksWeek.
If you're a book creator and your book gets banned, please respond to this post with your book and its buy link on bookshop.org. That way we can support indies and banned books 💛

I'm up for sabbatical in 2027. That's when I hope to launch a writer's retreat and residence in Detroit. Focused primarily (not exclusively) on Black children's authors & illustrators.
Do I have the money? Or a building? No, not yet!
But I do have 🙏🏿 & A Plan!

Dear indie bookstores:
Please stop creating your logos (& posts & graphics &c.) with genAI. Those tools are built on the stolen work of the authors & illustrators you're supposed to be supporting & promoting. It's like someone using you for recommendations & buying from Amazon, only worse.

Real children's authors employ illustrators because the visuals in that medium are as integral to the story as the words on the page. My buddy Maria did the illustrations for P is for Pterodactyl and her art is a big reason why it became a hit.

I've always been impressed by the fact that the stretch goals for this magazine are things like "we pay our artists and authors even better."
I love writing genre fiction partly because the editors and publishers actually care about paying authors and illustrators.

The ecosystem of writers, editors, copyeditors, illustrators, book cover artists, and agents that AI could harm is mind-boggling. Please continue to buy books by real authors, and art by real artists. We are going to need your support.
Why? Who is this meant to be good for? Nobody wants your shit AI books, never mind 8,000 in a year. Just a terrible idea and a horrible road the publishing industry is heading down.
