Huh. I guess I'd thought of bagnios ONLY as brothels. This is almost certainly bc I first heard the term reading 19th century Texas newspaper coverage in which many editors, particularly in Galveston and Houston used it that way. Till your post and a google, I was ignorant of the other meaning.

Looking up honky-tonk on Wikipedia led me to bagnios and this rather expressive illustration.

"In England, [bagnio] was originally used to name coffeehouses that offered Turkish baths, but by 1740 it signified a boarding house where rooms could be hired with no questions asked, or a brothel."
