This photo captures a vibrant street scene in the historic center of Coimbra, Portugal. The focal point is a striking red, narrow building positioned at the intersection of two charming cobblestone streets. The building is framed by a mix of pastel-colored façades with wrought iron balconies on the left, and a slightly more modern look to the right, where some graffiti is visible. A bright yellow building and a baroque church with crosses rise behind the red structure, adding a dramatic architectural backdrop. People casually walk and sit, giving life to the urban scene under a partly cloudy sky. Street signage at the bottom hints at cafés or restaurants in the area.

This photo shows a striking medieval building in Coimbra, Portugal — the Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Sé Velha de Coimbra). The structure is made of golden-hued stone, showcasing a strong Romanesque style with rounded arches, thick walls, and small, narrow windows. The semi-circular apse with its decorative arcading and simple stonework highlights its 12th-century origins. Above, the octagonal lantern tower adds vertical emphasis, with Gothic details and pinnacles enhancing the fortress-like presence of the cathedral. In the foreground, a cyclist rides along a cobbled street, adding a sense of modern life against the backdrop of this centuries-old monument. A small wrought-iron fence separates the cathedral from a grassy area with an olive tree, reinforcing the historic Mediterranean setting.

On the hillside connecting Coimbra’s Baixa to its Alta, near Largo do Arco de Almedina—the former gateway to the medieval enclosure and a transition point between the defensive barbican and the oldest urban layout—a small balcony embodies a domestic gesture that reads as a visual intervention.
