The city has moved the three-masted ship Balclutha to the foot of Hyde Street. The magnificent vessel, at its new anchorage, swings in thick luminous fog. It reminds me of Jules Verne and the engravings of Gustave Doré in the musty novels of my childhood. The Alcatraz foghorn howls endlessly. (1988)

This is a good watch and a good listen!

"Zombie Towns is four video episodes and a seven-part podcast, funded by NZ On Air for Newsroom and RNZ."

They look at Balclutha (Southland) and Tokoroa (South Waikato) and go in depth on the history and on what changed.

TVNZ on air has a good short doco going about zombie towns. Balclutha figured out how to use their local tradies to build 13 really good houses affordably, sell them affordably, and still make a profit on them. Saw on YouTube last night.

Be more like Clutha, New Zealand.

i support all ships' rights to exist in fiction. has anyone written fiction about the Balclutha yet? let's get more ships in fiction!!
Proship literally is NOT short for 'problematic ship.' It's the prefix 'pro' as in 'for' and the word 'ship.' 'For shipping,' aka supporting all ships' right to exist in fiction without harassing real people over fictional content. I won't say there aren't bad eggs in the proship community-

Reading about Otago has maybe a little triggering impact. But I keep thinking about Balclutha, my family is considered to have founded it back in the day so we've had family reunions there. I've lost touch with friends made there but I hope they'll be okay.
