I maintain that Fran and Balthier are just Chewie and Han, and in the same way, Han - Balthier, who thinks he is in charge - is just Chewie's dog.

I've played Final Fantasy XII twice before, both times I ended up dropping it after about 20 hours, and I'm at that point again
The narrative is so politics driven. So many moving shadows and bold proclamations of empire, its such a departure from the more character driven stories that preceded it.

my first thought was Skeletor for some reason and second one ended up being Balthier from FF12 (maybe because of the guns? 🤔)

Amusingly, the combat being too easy is one of the only criticisms I have of the IZJS version of XII. The jobs are all crazy overtuned and, along with the characters having really good stat growths, lets you totally break the game.
For instance, the best class for Balthier is... Black Mage.

Its crazy that Balthier is the closest we will get to a machinist protag in a mainline final fantasy game. and i do not consider the mmo’s mainline even though i love them a lot and they are numbered titles

On the one hand, he does rock it very well (because he's Balthier, of course.) On the other hand, he looks like every generic white actor ready to grace a red carpet event.

FF12 kind of had that too. Like Vaan was our main character but it was really about Ashelia, Basch, and Balthier.
