As labor migration shifts household burdens, more women must enter high-risk forests to sustain their families. 🧵

A new study reveals habitat degradation in Bardiya National Park’s Babai Valley has reduced suitability for translocated rhinos, forcing them to range widely.

Prolonged dry seasons are increasing ecological stress, driving rhinos into community forests and sparking local conflicts.

During most of my stays in Nepal, I try to get to the mountains. This time I made it to the plains—to the sprawling Banke & Bardiya National Parks, the tiny Blackbuck Conservation Area, the savannahs of Shuklaphanta, & the 1,453-meter Dodhara-Chandani bridge over the Mahakali River. Spectacular.

BARDIYA National Park - Learn from our experience, and make yours better! We thoroughly enjoyed our 2024 safari experiences in Botswana and Tanzania, but our rhinoceros sightings were like grains of rice through binoculars. 😦 Once we learned that you could see rhinos (and tigers, Oh My!) in Nepal, we were in! Nepal has several national parks, the most popular of which is Chitwan, a theoretical 6 hours from Pokhara, and Bardiya.

To manage a surge in tiger encounters, Nepal is planning a new park near Chitwan.

Experts are divided: while it could ease overcrowded holding centers, many argue that tourism-funded enclosures are ecologically ineffective compared to addressing the root causes of habitat conflict.

Nepal’s tiger population reached a record 429, but growth is concentrated in newer national parks.

While prey density rose 74% in older Bardiya Park, tiger numbers fell 10% there, suggesting drought, water access, and invasive weeds are driving tiger movement across borders and park lines.
