I always forget Bareil starts off as quite a good character before he winds up Kira's fuck toy.

Unfortunately this is where Bareil starts to fall down as a character as he starts sniffing around Kira way too hard in such a Catholic coded religion where he's set to be Pope.

Speaking of Star Trek Tumblr usernames, everyone should follow Garak's Padded Bra. They're my absolute favorite.

Also Kira prefers Winn's policies to his! I dunno if that says more about Kira, Winn or Bareil.

And I don’t think liking Kira is what’s wrong with Bareil—at least I can’t imagine why it would be—but he DOES completely collapse as an interesting character. I think they just forgot to give him anything else BUT God-bothering and Kira-boning.

If anyone deserves the right to be happily making out with a handsome (if boring) hunk, it’s Kira. She has earned a break. And yet we know enough of her character to know that she will never be completely blindsided by Bareil because she’ll never let her guard down completely.

'You can't run a country on good vibes.' ~ Vedek Bareil

I actually liked Vedek Bareil, dammit. He had way more going for him, and was a more believable love interest for Kira, than the utter non-entity (aside from a few occasions when he's a total asshole) that is Shakaar.

(Kira x Odo = OTP, though.)

that's season one. it's obviously beneficial for the show's narrative for winn to become the new kai but it's kind of insane that she does. and it doesn't even make sense that bareil steps aside later given his character here. but also louise fletcher is just so good as winn lol

more like "saved by the bareil"
except... ooh noo

And Nana Visitor makes Kira so perfectly dynamic and emotionally effusive. Her grief, her anger, her spirituality, and her sexuality are always compelling, but the show’s secret weapon is her joy: Visitor’s big open-hearted smile instantly sells you on whatever she’s looking at, unless it’s Bareil.

god damnit

rewatching DS9, on S2E2 The Circle

Kira: I'm useless here

Bareil: So?

Kira: So?! I need to feel useful!

Bareil: It might be interesting to explore "useless" for a while... see how it feels.

way to call me out

50. BAREIL: DS9 was usually quite good at incorporating nuanced stories of faith and religion into the secular-utopian Star Trek milieu, but bringing in this sack of wet cardboard as the Cool Priest Who Fucks was hatefully, disgustingly anti-theist and the Pope should have condemned the show for it.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 2 (1993/94)

And so... DS9 starts its gradual morph into serialised storytelling...

A much stronger outing than the first season, although it's partially let down with the character of Vedek Bareil

That Finale though... wow

bitch, bareil never HAD a brain
October 2, 2026 at 7:43 AM
I swore up and down for about a week that this was a great episode of Deep Space Nine, only to realise I was thinking of another episode in which Kai Winn negotiates a treaty and this is, in fact, the episode in which Jake and Nog go on a date and Vedek Bareil just really loves his job.
Where Everybody Has Gone Before - Episode 16 - Deep Space 9 - “Life Support”

In this week's episode of WEHGB Jake realises Nog comes from a culture of sexists.

Also, a man melts his own brain to get through negotiations.

I think Bareil and Shakar were good ideas in concept but both were horribly miscast, especially Bareil. He's supposed to come off as a serene counterbalance to her hotheadedness, but instead he comes off more like a serial killer.
September 24, 2026 at 7:18 PM
Also she's 100% right about her skepticism of Bajoran membership into the Federation, 100% right about Bareil killing himself for the peace treaty, 100% right about covering up Kai Opaka's collaboration, and 100% right about the need for a strong central government on Bajor

Ben and I are binge watching DS9 and we always find some character to irrationally hate on together and this time it’s Vedek Bareil, who sucks and is boring and he sucks.
September 19, 2026 at 5:21 PM
Whereas if it were intentionally written with stability as its overriding principle, Bareil could’ve had some real juice, and we would’ve had more interesting material with stuff like the d’jarras, instead of “whatever the writers want this week”, which is largely what we got
