Gibbaeum album, also known as shark's mouth mesemb, is a small species of succulent in the family Aizoaceae. It is endemic to the Western Cape province in South Africa. It is found in the northern parts of the Langeberg in the Barrydale region. There are two sub-populations known, but the population of one has substantially reduced due to road construction. The surviving population is threatened due to encroachment by horticulturists. Gibbaeum album is an evergreen cactus / succulent with blue and green foliage. In spring and summer purple and white flowers emerge. Features glaucous texture. Grows well with mostly sun - mostly shade and low water. Prefers to be dry when dormant. Does well in acidic, gritty, rocky and well-drained soil. Gibbaeum album is a dwarf, compact scarcely branched clump-forming succulent with greyish-white united leaf-pairs. Growing , always above ground. The 4 to 15 leaf-pais, develops mainly towards the outer edge hence pressed laterally to the soil, the interior of old plants is occupied by persisting old capsules and old leaves remnants.

My theory of the wire windpump is this: if there isn't a group of informal traders by the roadside at the town entrance selling wire craft windpumps, then that town isn't a tourism destination.

There were none in Barrydale.

Photo from Barrydale's tourism office. Exterior photo of Ronnies Sex Shop. It's a perfectly ordinary (and unremarkable) roadside tavern. Square, blocky, white-painted, with the name in red letters, and "sex" seemingly painted randomly on the wall next to the name "Ronnies Shop". Wooden tables are outside to the one side, motorbikes parked in front. Legend has it that, many decades ago, a regular decided to paint the word "sex" alongside "Ronnies", and that caused multiple drivers, travelling through the remoteness of the Karoo, to stop and take a second look. Out of such stories, tourism legends grow, and it soon made it to the Lonely Planet as a spot to visit. Tourists from all over the world stop, have a drink, are somewhat disappointed and mystified, and move on.

Across the road from my small business advice centre was an art design shop & they used to visit a lot to use our copier. The owners were a delightful & flamboyantly gay couple. I mentioned I was heading to Barrydale & they went, "Oh!"

Barrydale itself, back then, was only famous for Ronnie's Sex Shop (not a sex shop), but is a green oasis amongst the red brown rock. Quiet, tranquil, idyllic with plenty of well maintained Cape Dutch colonial architecture. Convenient to the Garden Route & anywhere else. Just, like many towns, poor.
