"Based" doesn't come from "based in reality" or "freebased" (lol). Based comes from Lil B aka BasedGod, an early cloud rapper and a hugely influential figure on early weird Twitter. The terminally online right might not know it but they took "based" from the culture.

Neither of us is wrong. The 'based' in BasedGod comes from the AAVE slang basehead, which itself comes from the verb freebase/freebasing/freebased which as I understand it is the process of making crack from cocaine.

"Based" isn't short for "based in reality", it's internet slang derived from Lil B's 2011 song "Thank You BasedGod" which was snowcloned into a "Thank you based ________" meme and thence into "based" being a standalone positive word meaning approximately "good and cool"
