Bassets are having a reckoning with this now. Many west coast bassets are being bred more squat and frankly shorter legged than the east coast counterparts. Not great. It's an aesthetic choice that WILL result in arthritic animals.

I have read about breeders who try to breed to a working standard, ie judging how well a dog does the job for which they were intended vs. a rigid physical standard, and this seems like a solid choice to me.

They also like frozen bananas and snuggling. Bassets are the most snuggly dogs.

Bassets, Boston terriers (my grandmother raised them and swore by them), poodles, westies, and dachshund come immediately to mind.

Breeders are working on it, but it takes time to test and breed out bad traits. All of my bassets are DNA tested for predisposed problems. Bulldogs require the same.
To that end, giant breed cats are prone to heart issues. If a breeder has not done an echocardiogram, run.

yes, not to mention they have very strong hunting instincts, esp bassets! they gotta follow that nose 🐽 ... they would be so at home with a professional hunter tbh.

yep super common in chihuahua mixes. The type of dwarfism they carry is a less consistent one than the one in dachshunds and corgis and bassets.

I've fostered bassets for years and my husband is the weak link 😂 We do have a rule that if a foster gets returned we adopt them.

So sorry, TBogg. I don’t know how many Bassets back I started following you, but losing a pup is always devastating. We said goodbye to our weird, crazy rescue mutt a few months ago and it still hurts.
