Bats make great mummies! Most bats give birth to only one pup a year (there are exceptions) and nurse them, often while flying! While some bat pups will hang out at the roost while mom hunts, migrating bats have to fly while their pups hang on!

Averaging over 200 grams, with a wingspan of 1 meter (3 ft), the Spectral Bat (Vampyrum spectrum) is not only the largest species of bat in the Americas, but also the largest carnivorous bat in the entire world! Don’t be misled by this bat’s name “Vampyrum” for it is not a blood drinking sanguivore.

As Bat Week draws to a close, let’s celebrate the bat flower, Tacca chantrieri. This plant gets its name from the two bracts that spread out behind the inflorescence, resembling the outspread wings of a bat! Happy Bat Week & Happy Halloween. #batweek #Dioscoreaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱🦇

Many figs are bat-dispersed, especially those with fruits borne on the trunk & main branches (cauliflory). Here’s Ficus racemosa with masses of figs placed where bats can easily fly in and take them. #batweek #Ficus #Moraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱🦇

#BatWeek Ireland’s first-ever #SpeciesActionPlan for the lesser horseshoe bat set out an ambitious roadmap to protect and conserve this rare species over 5 years (2022–2026). We look forward to sharing our lessons at the inspiring #LIFE+PodkowiecTowersProject Closing Conference next week in Poland.

Next year, bat colonies in North Cascades and Olympic National Parks are set to get the vaccine. 💚

Intern Sophia Hammerle helped bring this story to life, with donor-funded housing support.
