Brilliant day out at Beamish. First visit in more than 30 years.

I'm not sure it's a good sign that the toys I used to play with as a kid are now in a museum?

Bayko was the first plastic construction toy, produced from 1933-1967. Museum Trustee, Phil, remembers being given this Bayko set when he was a boy in the 1950s. His collection grew thanks to several birthday and Chrismas presents.

Bayko. Like Lego but you slid the bricks on to metal spikes. Lethal.

Looks just like the sort of construction that we made as youngsters in the 1950's with Bayko. I imagine it could well date from then

Never had that set just the house building blocks. When it comes to Bayko so amused me that the houses I have lived in 20's - 30's still have features as seen in those sets

Bayko?
A cousin had that when I was a kid, I think it was quite expensive

Our Nana use to have a set of Bayko in the bottom draw where she kept some toys to keep us amused when we visited. Slightly limited play value for 6 year olds but obv nowadays I'd love to spend the evening building tiny models of 1930's detached bungalows, not as much as seeing Nana again obv.

That Bayko was potentially lethal, with the vertical steel rods in the baseplate

I finally broke out the #Bayko building set I got a few years ago. I even found a converter set last year, so I can build bigger things.
Bayko predates Lego; it has moulded architectural bricks which slot around wire rods. I love the aesthetic & colours.

Do you remember the Betta Bilda construction sets? I was lucky to build with these as well as a big box of Bayko my mother found in a charity shop.

I'm sure my folks had a set of Bayko, I can remember building something with it as a child. Not sure what happened to it, maybe it's still in their loft...
