The Conservation Officer Service in British Columbia has confirmed that a grizzly bear attack in Bella Coola, located on the province's central coast, has resulted in the deaths of Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 19. Family members reported the pair missing on Sunday, and their remains were discovered on Monday and Tuesday. Inspector Jeff Tyre of the Conservation Officer Service stated in a video message that more than one grizzly may have been involved in the attack, though it remains unclear if additional bears were part of the incident. The search for the second body was conducted by RCMP and conservation officers on Tuesday afternoon, following the discovery of the first set of remains the previous day. Authorities are continuing efforts to capture the bear or bears responsible, with any captured animals to be euthanized in accordance with provincial guidelines to ensure public safety. This incident follows a similar attack last November, when a grizzly bear injured one adult and three children in the same area. That bear was never captured. Tyre emphasized that officers are in regular contact with the Nuxalk Nation and the Bella Coola community to provide updates, urging residents to avoid the west trail area of the Snootka trail system. A fundraiser set up by relative Mary Melissa Smith highlighted that Selah Reed was 20, 'with her whole life ahead of her,' while Jennifer Balcarras leaves behind three adult children and a grandchild. The community is mourning the loss of two lives in what appears to be a tragic wildlife encounter.
