I take glass beadmaking at an art school in Seattle that also has glass blowing and fusing, welding, bronze casting, as well as jewelry, printmaking and more. It’s a bit far away so I don’t go often but there should be more of these places everywhere.

Bead Society of Great Britain AGM 2025 'Looking at Anglo-Saxon Beads' Talk & Beadmaking Demonstration by Sue Heaser Saturday 5 July 2025, 10.00-4.00 West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village & Country Park Icklingham Road, West Stow, Suffolk IP28 6HG AGM 2025 is free to BSGB members In 2025 our annual AGM will be held at the Visitor Centre at the Anglo-Saxon Village and Country Park at West Stow in Suffolk, near to Bury St Edmunds Once the business bit is over, we will be able to have our usual 'Show and Tell', then look at Anglo-Saxon beads excavated from West Stow, Westgarth Gardens and Eriswell in the Study Room where the AGM takes place. Sue Heaser will give a talk on her research into Anglo-Saxon glass beadmaking and a beadmaking demonstration of how making replicas has contributed greatly to her study. The Beads and Techniques of Anglo-Saxon Beadmakers is a lavishly illustrated talk about Sue's research using hot glass beadmaking to investigate beads from 1500 years ago. The Anglo-Saxons buried their dead with their personal possessions and, in the case of the women, wearing their beads. Many hundreds of thousands of beads have been excavated over time and they are mostly hidden away in museum storerooms. Sue has spent the last 7 years investigating these beads and photographing them for her research. Using replica tools and a simple blow torch to mimic the temperatures of the small bead furnaces used in the 5th century. Sue has worked her way through hundreds of ancient bead designs. She will talk about her exciting discoveries and how while many beads were imported, almost half of the most beautiful were locally made in Britain. Day 9 of the #ArtAdventCalendar brings me to ceramic mugs. While I've got polymer clay beadmaking pretty steady... #ceramics is still on the harsh learning curve. Getting consistent shapes and sizes is still a mystery. Mugs are worse because it's a 2 part challenge between handles and bodies.
A ceramic mug with a bowl shaped body and a half circle handle. The mug has a checkered pattern of grass green squares and white five petal flowers. The handle is also green. The buff colour of the ceramic is visible between the checkerboard layers of the square and flower motif.

Was definitely the teacher’s pet for my wire wrapping workshop today; she asked me to shoot her an email if I start selling stuff. Tomorrow is night one of my jewelry metalsmithing class, and beadmaking continues Tuesday. Whoosh!

Week one of Beginning Beadmaking at Pratt. Already have a half-dozen or so beads annealing in the kiln.
Pratt Fine Arts Center, a local nonprofit with a ton of classes in lampwork, glass blowing, jewelry and metalsmithing, blacksmithing, sculpture, printmaking... it's a long list. One of my first attempts at a two-color bead. A bead rolled in glass frit.

I seem to be reverting to the 60s, making seat cushions for the 1961 Scotty trailer using the 1965 Viking sewing machine. Even the fabric found in my stash fits the theme, maybe from Mom’s sewing cabinet. Back to beadmaking tomorrow but today this creative flashback calmed the brain in a good way.

Sketching the process of making a bead helps me figure out how to translate the bead I’m imagining into reality. I want to make some two part dog beads where the head can turn independently of the body.
