🐻 It’s #BearAwarenessWeek, and nobody celebrates quite like Tundra.

Our resident grizzly bear is living her best life at Harmony Hill, splashing in her pool, snacking on her favorites, and reminding us all why bears like her deserve safe spaces to thrive. 🎉

It's #BearAwarenessWeek. Do you want to know what bears are thinking? Check out this video with @aliboyle.bsky.social explaining how we know what animals are thinking:

#BrownBear thread below! Learn about #BrownBear ecology!

I'll be posting old threads I put together years ago for each of the bear species. There is the original Twitter link, & I've reposted each part of the thread for those without access to that platform.

They aren't horrible beasts trying to hunt down humans. They are just doing their own thing. Trying to survive. In most cases, bad encounters are avoidable. Good encounters are memorable!

You can still have really great, positive interactions with bears. Seeing a brown bear in the wild is quite exciting. Just remember to treat the animal with respect, and give it some credit. Bear tolerance for humans is pretty high.

Keep in mind, bears and people will respond differently. Unfortunately, there aren't many hard and fast rules here. But a little bit of education about what to do in bear encounters is great for you and the bear. Be smart. Be safe.

If the bear rolls you over, roll back. If the bear saw you as a threat, and thinks you are no longer a threat, then it will most likely leave you alone (if it is acting defensively). Predatory attacks mean fight back.

DON'T EVER RUN. Running is the worst response to a bear encounter. Continue to make noise, speak firmly to it. If the bear makes contact with you, keep backpack on if you have one. It will help protect. Cover your head with arms. Always try to lay on your stomach.

Make sure you know how to discharge bear spray ahead of time. Practice. Know how full the can is/how far it fires.
Bear spray was shown to be very close to 100% effective in deterring a bear attack, better than firearms. If you're doing what you should, you'll likely not need it.

Educate yourself a little on bear behavior. Know a defensive attack from a predatory attack (most attacks are defensive). #BrownBears will often bluff charge (run at you and stop short, trying to intimidate). Stand your ground, remain calm. Use bear spray if necessary.

When in bear country: store food appropriately, keep trash and pet food inaccessible, carry bear spray, make noise. Pay attention to any posted warnings. They are there for a reason. Drive slowly. Hike in groups. Keep dogs leashed.

Despite the increasing encounter rate, #BrownBear attacks on people are relatively rare. Surprise & curiosity are the 2 most common causes.

Extensive human development is more likely to cause #BrownBears to alter home ranges, as they don't adapt as well to semi-urban regions.

#BrownBears may threaten life and property in search for food, and are often killed as a consequence.

Because #BrownBears live in many of the same areas as American black bears, they are also experiencing more human contact

Bears are sexually dimorphic, meaning there is a diff between males and females aside from sexual organs. For bears, males are up to 30% larger in body size.

Body size of brown bears is variable depending on sex, location, and diet type. Average weight across 19 populations = 478 lb

Black bears avoid brown bears, and will often use different spaces or will switch to nocturnal or diurnal depending on brown bear presence. This is probably because its size and strength makes the #BrownBear quite formidable against a black bear.

While brown bear and black bear territories often overlap, you won't typically find them hanging out together.

In Yellowstone, bears frequently chase wolves off a kill. In Katmai, however, the opposite often happens and the wolves dominate.

Other predators are often intimidated off carrion or bear kills by the #BrownBear's sheer size and strength. But wolves, cougars, tigers, and black bears are all competitors for similar food sources in many parts of the #BrownBear's range.
