It's colder and it's raining. We escaped busy London and took the train to St Albans. We're going to visit the museum and then walk to the cathedral (it's supposed to stop raining this afternoon). But first, a Christmassy coffee: a Caramel Nutcracker Latte. #bearinEngland #stalbans

This house dates from the 15th c and is thought to have been home to the mother of the wonderfully named Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell (1650-1707). As a naval officer he is unfortunately most well known for the circumstances in which he died. #bearinEngland #Hastings

In the Bayeux Tapestry the Normans are shown raising a mound of earth (or motte) and placing on it a timber building. Hastings can therefore claim to be the first motte and bailey castle in England. #bearinEngland #Hastings

We also saw Roman mosaics in Verulamium Park. Not as impressive as the ones we saw in Sicily, but still beautiful. There was a lovely view of the cathedral from the park. Fortunately, it stopped raining. #bearinEngland

At 85 metres, the cathedral of St Albans has the longest nave in England. Saint Alban is known as Britain’s first saint and was buried on the site 1700 years ago. #bearinEngland

The Collegiate Church of St. Mary in the Castle was built around 1075, incorporating a Saxon chapel, which already stood on the site. Evidence for this appears in the Bayeux Tapestry where William is shown standing outside a chapel before the Battle of Hastings. #bearinEngland #Hastings
