HR: I’m going to ask a behavioral question, then I will ask you follow-ups on it

Me: *gives behavioral answer*

HR: I don’t have any follow-ups. That was a really great answer.

Formal interview on Friday.

Guy gave an answer like a kid just out of college being asked in their first behavioral question at a job interview lol
A GOP state Senate candidate in Minnesota (Austin Peterson) was asked during a debate what he's done to ensure clean water in his community, and his answer was bizarre: "When we put gasoline in our boats, we're putting that gasoline in on the shore and not in the lake. So I mean, it's small things."

Behavioral Interview Question:

"Can you describe a time when you had to strategize your tasks effectively to meet all your responsibilities within a tight deadline?"

Prep six stories, not sixty answers. Conflict, failure, leadership, ambiguity, your biggest impact, a time you disagreed with your boss. Every behavioral question in every interview is one of these wearing a different costume.

Feel very negative about my first behavioral interview, which featured no question—none—for which I planned.

Feel very positive, however, about the technical interview that followed it.

The challenge is that I think the decision is consensus. One ‘disagree’ or ‘unsure’ spoils the rest… 😞

My favorite behavioral interview question for Data Scientists: "you're at a party and you meet a CEO, who asks you what Data Science is really about. They are a CEO, so you're gonna need to explain like a child can understand. What do you say?"

My Preferred Behavioral Interview Question

"Tell me about a time when someone was wrong on the Internet and you brilliantly set them straight, even though it wasn't your job and no one cared and they hated you for it. . ."

New behavioral interview question just dropped

I'm a Mets fan. This is a behavioral interview question geared at understanding how they make executive decisions with multiple, competing stakeholders.
I need to hear what @dewayneforminneapolis.com , @omarfatehmn.com , jazz Hampton, and @jacobfrey.bsky.social would do if they were the twins GM at the deadline.

This will tell me who to vote for

Interview prep tip: write down 3-5 stories using the STAR method before your interview. Having structured examples ready means you can adapt to any behavioral question. Confidence comes from preparation.

I've recently had an in-person interview for a local edtech company and I have a few takeaways from it.

1: I've done enough behavioral questions that they don't phase me anymore (yay)
2: I completely flubbed on the question "What are the features of OOP" but when asked about them specifically

Interview tip: before any behavioral question, pause and say 'Let me think about the best example.'

That 3-second break signals confidence and lets you pick your strongest story.

I like hearing about things that didn't go well because I want to hear about how you drove improvements from that point onward.

What's your LEAST favorite behavioral interview question to get asked?

I had a behavioral question interview yesterday, and I surely felt this "vibe check" moment. I was a bit nervous at the beginning, but quickly became comfortable speaking with the interviewer, feeling a good vibe from him. He also seemed to be enjoying the interview too.

Prep 6 stories, not 60 answers. Conflict, failure, leadership handled badly, ambiguity you had to sit with, your biggest impact, a time you disagreed with your manager. Every behavioral question is one of these wearing a different hat.

Download some "behavioral interview" questions and write down some possible 2-minute responses to each question. Then get a friend or family to ask you the questions so you can rehearse your responses. Trust me, it works ... and it is a HUGE confidence booster.

a technical interview is theoretically useful if your people work under stress but like literally nobody fucking acts how they say they'll act a behavioral question serves solely to know if the interviewee can *say bullshit* under stress which. are you having your developers in meetings with clients
