I focus on the viewpoint character's fears and attempts to prepare themselves. Even experienced fighters will be worried, and I usually write everyman characters who don't feel good about combat.

Gallara’s heart pounded so hard the riders could probably hear it. She tickled the air with the gestures of a quick alarm spell - not that the brigands were taking her by surprise, but anyone who tried to touch her would get a lovely electric shock, even if they stabbed her right after. Better than nothing. Watching the bandits, Jorang reached into a pocket in his belt and pulled out … a full-length quarterstaff. Ah, so that was why the belt had felt magical. Nifty. “Be prepared to defend,” he ordered, like he expected everyone to listen, “but make no aggressive moves. We may yet be able to avoid conflict.” He stood loosely, holding his staff as though he were just some traveler with a walking stick. The guards stood in rough formation, holding their spears straight up and glancing at each other uncomfortably. Brandolok rested a hand on the hilt of his sword, somber and imposing at the same time. The young woman reached for the spearhead on her belt, then hesitated for a second and drew the dagger instead, hiding it behind her thigh. Gallara kept her hand off her sword, even though she would have felt better holding it; she found herself wishing she’d bothered to practice since she’d bought the damn thing.
