Before the Benin Bronzes were objects, they were the memory, history, and ceremony of a great people. In this essay I revisit a story of colonial violence, loss, memory, and survival and remind us that the "Benin Bronzes" need to be home. They need to go home. folukeafrica.com/museum-talk-...

The Kingdom of Benin was a kingdom in what is nowadays southern Nigeria. It grew out of the previous Edo Kingdom of Igodomigodo around the 11th century, and it reached its golden age in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its capital, Edo (nowadays Benin City) was a hub for commerce and art.

The best example of their craftsmanship are the Benin Bronzes. These are a group of maybe several thousand metal plaques and sculptures that decorated the royal palace of the Oba (king). Most were made in the 14th to 16th centuries, out of brass, bronze and other materials, using lost-wax casting.

The news caused outrage in Britain. On February 1897, British forces invaded Benin city. The city was sacked and burned. Sacred sites, ceremonial buildings and palaces were looted and destroyed, and the Oba was exiled to Calabar. Many died. This was the end of the Kingdom of Benin.

The British had their eyes on Benin for many years, but the kingdom was able to stand their ground. Until the Massacre of 1897.
In 1897 an expedition of 250 people led by consul general James Phillips came from London, claiming to want to negotiate with the Oba. Their true intention is disputed.

The Oba sent word that he was busy celebrating the Igue festival, and that they were not welcome until after. Despite this, the party continued to approach the city. The expedition, undesired by the Benin people, was attacked near the village of Ugbine. Only two British men escaped, one wrote a book
