Benitoite on natrolite with neptunite. Benitoite is a barium titanium cyclosilicate. Formed when Ba-bearing hydrothermal fluids pass through Ti-bearing blueschists during retrograde metamorphism associated with serpentinite mélanges.

Well the halftime show by Bad Bunny - aka Benito Antonio - aka San Benito was phenomenal. I would just like to add that it is fitting he did the show in California as Benitoite is our "State Gem" (this is a pic from street art on the @ucdavis.bsky.social campus).

K1: how many things are scams exactly ?
Me: strictly speaking I'm not sure it's a scam
K1: it's a scam and I want benitoite to be the high status gem
(Benitoite is pretty rare, just found in one river in California)

K1 is into gemstones so I reminded him that the high price of diamonds and their high status is mostly the result of a monopoly + savvy marketing campaign by de Beers
www.gemsociety.org/article/are-...
Diamonds are pretty common, can be grown in labs and also de Beers still has a huge stockpile

First day back to work today since last Tuesday.
Tried to think of the darkest mineral i could, and came up with neptunite.
But even under all the darkness, there is still light (white, natrolite) and even some hidden gems (blue, benitoite).
Find your gems everyone 🩵

The annual #mineralcup contest is underway here on Bluesky. I don't think this mineral is part of it this time, but admire it anyway.

I’m going with #Neptunite for today’s #MinCup23 matchup. It has beautiful crystals, is friends with Benitoite, and it’s named after the Roman god of the sea because of its close association with aegerine (named after the Norse god of the sea) at its type locality.
