imagine having beta cells in your body. that shit must be so embarassing

haters are jealous of me being so alpha that my immune system purged my body of all beta cells

the apoe4 gene, a major alzheimer's risk, damages brain blood vessels by turning pericytes (vessel-stabilizing cells) into scar-formers, leading to amyloid buildup. blocking a protein called tgf-beta protected these cells!

induction with antithymocyte globulin followed by maintenance with tacrolimus plus sirolimus. About two million Americans have type 1 diabetes, which is caused when the immune system destroys islet cells. A subset of islet cells, the beta cells, secrete insulin. Without insulin, glucose cannot enter

Important first-in-human report today for donor pancreatic islet beta-cell transplant to an individual w/Type 1 diabetes. With genome editing, there was no immune response induced or need for immunosuppression. Major implications for transplantation in general @nejm.org

Survival of Transplanted Allogeneic Beta Cells with No Immunosuppression | NEJM
The need to suppress a patient’s immune system after the transplantation of allogeneic cells is associated with wide-ranging side effects. We report the outcomes of transplantation of genetically m...

Gonads and germ cells have an interdependent relationship in the cnidarian #Hydractinia. Germ cells secrete a TGF-beta ligand (called Gonadless) to induce and maintain the somatic gonad; gonads activate Tfap2 in pluripotent stem cells (i-cells) to commit them to germ fate

Scientists use a bacterium, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which naturally infects & transfers its DNA to plant cells.

They add the beta-carotene gene to the bacterium, which transfers it to rice cells. The rice cells grow into mature plants that produce beta-carotene in 8-12 months.

Medical isn't my field but I like to read their studies of their breakthroughs. Mt. Sinai was able to convert pancreatic alpha cells which are abundant into insulin producing long term beta cells via a drug they made in chorus with ozempic. Previously beta cells would have to be implanted.

Today, we report that chronic intermittent fasting impairs beta-cell maturation and function in adolescent mice. Using scRNAseq, we delineated a "maturation score" for beta-cells. Long-term IF good if you're older, might be harmful if you are still developing!

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine have used a cutting-edge model system to uncover the mechanism by which SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, induces new cases of diabetes, and worsens c...

My NIH postdoctoral research looks at mitochondria in beta-cells of the pancreas (the insulin-producing cells of the body) to research new treatments that could prevent or slow the progression of diabetes 🔬
To help people understand the importance of NIH, share what you’ve used their funding for (in easily understandable terms).

I’ll start: my NIH postdoc funding helped me develop and test AI tools that could identify skin cancer across diverse skin tones.

Ah something I am an expert in.
The US pioneered this work. The protocol to differentiate stem cells into beta cells was done by Melton, and refined by Leibel’s group. Melton did this at Harvard. He left Harvard to work at Vertex. They have a trial currently testing the technique for T1DM.

Common beta-blockers are fat soluble and slightly alkaline. This lets them pass through the membrane into cells. They then get charged and can't get back out. They go to the lysosome, but don't digest because of alkalinity. This causes an inflammation response that can be blocked by antihistamines.

In a major scientific breakthrough, Chinese researchers may have developed a potential cure for Type 2 diabetes — a chronic condition affecting hundreds of millions globally. The treatment works by regenerating insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, effectively reversing the disease rather

Beta cells intrinsically sense and limit their secretory activity via mTORC1-RhoA signaling
Krell et al. show that mTORC1 in β cells acts as an activity sensor, activated by the same signals that trigger insulin secretion. This activation, in turn, inhibits insulin release via RhoA-dependent...
