RIP Beverley Martyn. 55 years ago today, this nice review of John & Beverley Martyn's fine album "The Road to Ruin" appeared in Fusion (14 May 1971).

"John Martyn is a Scottish singer/songwriter and guitarist who recorded a couple of solo albums in England. Beverly, the mysterious voice on Simon & Garfunkel's "Fakin' It" ("Good morning, Mr. Leitch, have you had a busy day?"'), appears in the background on the cover of Bert Jansch's It Don't Bother Me album, travelled and sang with Elyse Weinberg, and cut a Randy Newman song ("Happy New Year") as a single some years back. Together, John and Beverly recorded one of the best and one of the most thoroughly neglected albums of 1970, Stormbringer!.
Their newest offering, Road to Ruin, is an extension of the music on Stormbringer!, and a beautiful extension at that. Where Stormbringer! was a collection of songs, Road to Ruin transcends songs to the point where the songs both stand on their own and also work as brilliant stopping-off points for driving, emotional music, as in the title song. The sound is distinctive, rhythmically close to The Band, but not nearly as limited in scope or arrangement. When one guitar is needed, one guitar is used.
John's solo songs, "Tree Green" and "Parcels," are gentle and beautifully under-stated. His bottleneck work on "Tree Green" is superb. Beverly's songs, folky and soft on Stormbringer!, are solid rockers here. Her voice is strong and deep and warm and she never loses control of the songs. "Auntie Aviator" features some of Paul Harris's best piano work; he makes the song float weightless.
Paul Wheeler's "Give Us a Ring" (the only song not written by John or Beverly) is a contagiously happy tune about waiting for a friend to bring some dope back from another country. The whole album is happy, actually; as it says on the back cover: "At the risk of being quoted (pause), after a close scrutiny and due consideration (emphasis) we think we can safely say quite categorically (emphasis) that this music has nothing to do with dying or anything like that." That about sums it up." (Brian Cullman)
