watching Drunken Angel and the BFIplayer is not only a bad print but it’s stretched so badly they put toshiro Mifune in the traditional Japanese hugesuit

Cor, Jorge Grau's Grade-A zombie banger LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE (1974) has been added to the BFIPlayer for the spooky season. Here's my fan art from ten years ago that ended up on a bootleg German Blu ray release without my permission. How we laughed...

If Ozu's Floating Weeds was still on BFIplayer I would just watch this sequence over and over again for the beautiful perpendicular rain.

If you have a BFIplayer subscription I strongly recommend sinking £4.50 into renting La Chimera, one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen in ages. (An @annebillson.bsky.social recommendation iirc.) Josh O'Connor's white suit makes Lee Brilleaux look like Bryan Ferry.

An exceptionally good package from the good people at Folklore Tapes.

Have you seen (local, to me) 1960s folksy horror/sci-fi flick The Watchers yet? It's on the BFIplayer.

Watching Pandora's Box (Pabst, 1929) on BFIplayer and Jean-Luc Godard's line 'people talk about watching an old movie, nobody ever talks about reading an old book' has never seemed more to the point.

Netflix too expensive these days but eldest uses it for watching foreign language films 🤔

Watched Kurosawa's High & Low on BFIplayer after being reminded of it by a post by @annebillson.bsky.social. The first appearance of the villain an hour or so in is one of the most amazing sequences I've ever seen.

Robert Wynne-Simmons' pioneering folk horror THE OUTCASTS (1971) is now on @ovidtv.bsky.social. Here is a piece on Irish horror that I wrote for BFI, occasioned by the film's re-release last year on Blu-ray and BFIPlayer. www.bfi.org.uk/lists/10-gre...

The week definitely got better as it went along. Spending more time on BFIPlayer than Netflix definitely helped. Even if Rose of Nevada wasn't for me, a first ever watch of M and winding up the week with The Last Picture Show made it special.

I think I'll do a horror film this evening. Any recommendations?
I like: folk horror, ghosts as trauma, psychosexual weirdness, a24y arthouse shite.
I don't like: schlock, gore, torture porn.
I have: netflix, prime, shudder, mubi, bfiplayer, mubi, nowtv, kanopy (wow i need to unsub from at LEAST 2).

An absolutely ridiculous selection of great/interesting films on BFIPlayer right now. Loads of Kurosawa. A big chunk of Bergman. Tons of lurid 1970s euro horror. Hundreds of Beavers (×1).

Cold war, warm blood: Tomas Alfredson's disturbing coming-of-age saga LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008) now on BFIPlayer projectedfigures.com/2020/03/09/l...
Let The Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) (2008) - Projected Figures
Tomas Alfredson's LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (LÅT DEN RÄTTE KOMMA IN) traces pre-teen angst, vampiric longing and psychopathic tendencies in Cold War Stockholm.
