Recertifying decisions via e-closure: uniform improvements of conformal risk control and randomized e-BH
By Bai, Ramdas
Statistical procedures often control expected loss at a prescribed level while leaving part of their risk budget unused. Building on the e-value representation of risk-controlled decisions and the e-closure principle for multiple testing, we formulate recertification, a general paradigm for improving procedures by exploiting computable slack in their validity certificates. A valid procedure's losses normalized by their risk budgets form a state-indexed e-value collection; conversely, decisions whose normalized losses are bounded by this collection inherit its risk guarantees. Recertification uses distributional structure to quantify slack, enlarge the certifying e-values while preserving validity, and construct less conservative decisions. We develop two applications. For conformal risk control (CRC) with a known loss family, recertification redistributes unused risk budget among the held-out points of each hypothetical augmented sample. The resulting controller is valid under every finite exchangeable law and no more conservative than CRC on any calibration sample. For convex losses on an interval of actions, repeated recertification converges geometrically to an admissible controller. For false discovery rate control with arbitrarily dependent e-values, recertification exploits unused conditional budgets in randomized e-BH. It yields a closed-form randomized procedure whose rejection set contains that of randomized e-BH for every realization of the shared randomization and whose expected number of rejections is maximal subject to the same conditional budget constraints. Recertifying with the larger e-collection of closed e-BH gives a second closed-form procedure whose rejection set contains that of the first. Experiments on CIFAR-100 hierarchical classification and multiple testing simulations demonstrate improved budget utilization, informativeness and power over the baselines.

This collection of videos is cool.

The one with Milky Way BH replacing our sun, perspectives from each planet, is very cool—aside from the extreme radiation that would fry us all 😂✌️

Sample-Efficient Multiple Testing with Adaptive Data Collection
By Lin, Ma, Ren et al
This paper studies adaptive experimental design for multiple testing, where an experimenter sequentially chooses which hypothesis to sample. We propose the e-value-based posterior sampling (e-PS) procedure, which uses the empirical average of log e-value increments to guide randomized sampling and applies e-BH to construct rejection sets. Under conditionally valid e-value increments, the procedure controls the false discovery rate at arbitrary stopping times and produces nested rejection sets. We establish high-probability bounds on the number of samples needed to discover all nonnull hypotheses in terms of the growth and concentration of the underlying e-processes. We specialize these bounds to simple-versus-simple, composite-versus-simple, and simple-versus-composite testing. Simulations and experiments using joke ratings and watermarked text illustrate the procedure's power under limited sampling budgets.

I do suspect gas dynamics are important & necessary for driving up the masses of SMBH seeds in the early universe, but not in quite the same way as here—you need a central potential and a bunch of stellar mass bh to make things work the way we did…

But adding gas to a collection of bh will make

My other goal was to paint every 'Mech piloted by the eponymous Bounty Hunter. I succeeded, at least until the Tales of the Bounty Hunter collection established that one incarnation briefly piloted a Legionnaire. (cont.)
Eleven BattleMechs, mostly in very bright green with yellow checks. Front rank, left to right: Loki Mk II, Griffin-1N, Marauder, Griffin-2N (in leather brown), Loki Mk II (blue-gray with olive green limbs). Middle rank: Warhammer-6R, Timber Wolf BH (Mad Cat), Timber Wolf S (Mad Cat), Warhammer-9K (gray-blue with olive drab stripes). Back row: two Marauder II, one in bright green and one in crimson with olive green limbs.
