Thank you BOTH for this. It's what happened in science around the world when politicians since the 1990s decided it was a good idea to select the most "productive" projects and researchers to support as measured by bibliometry. Comparing apples & oranges and stoking wasteful competition instead.

The situation is actually quite paradoxical. Many Universities, Grant agencies, and Research institutions have signed the DORA protocol, but many members of evaluation panels are unaware, and/or keep on applied lazy evaluation criteria, propagating the toxic culture of bibliometry-based evaluation.

Possibly unpopular opinion: I think scientists of all fields SHOULD add with irrelevant citations in their papers: this will in no way harm genuine human readers (=the intended audience), but it will hurt citation counting bots and other forms of bibliometry which are pure evil.

Hmm. Glad it's good (I haven't tried it), but awfully worried about enshittification (Google Scholar is great but has felt precarious ever since it started ... and is unfriendly/useless for bibliometry ... bmb-common.blogspot.com/2011/11/goog... ). Hoping openalex.org continues to improve ...
