❄️ The Biboon Dress ❄️Welcoming the first snow fall on the territory of the Ojibwe Anishinaabe here in Lac Courte Oreilles reservation (Biboon) with this white sequin and satin dress, representing the cold and icy white sparkling snow. The winter season is a time of healing & reflection for Ojibwe people. It’s a time where stories are shared, sacred stories that are only shared during the winter season. This dress is a tribute to this beautiful season. For Ojibwe people, during the winter season, a time of darkness, we have a chance to turn inward with intention, nurturing our spiritual selves, bodies, minds, and our loved ones as we prepare for the longer and colder days ahead. It’s a time… a moment… to reflect on both the highs and lows of the past year. Celebrate your growth, resilience, and strength, as well as the blessings that may have gone unnoticed. More importantly, release anything that no longer serves you to make space for the positive opportunities awaiting you in the coming year. Our ancestors understood that to support our communities as good relatives, we must be grounded and strong. To help others, first you must help yourself. We each have the power to create a more connected and compassionate world, starting from within ourselves, our families, & our communities. This requires dedicating time and space for reflection, growth, and giving back. Let’s also remember to show care and compassion to those around us; we never know what people face within their own lives.Miigwech ❄️🤍 ~Jingo@aeriusbentonbanai@houseofjingledress#jingledress #ojibwe #biboonike #indigenous #native #traditionaldress

Using a few Ojibwe words (moon and winter) to complete the haiku.

Dibiki-giizis,
A sliver of light rising,
Biboon sky arrives.

Biboon, the Anishinaabe word for winter, begins with the winter solstice on December 21. Across many First Nations, the winter solstice is understood as a time for rest, reflection, and storytelling.

Seen some posts about Christmas lately and how while they wanna ditch it on principle, they don't want their kids to miss out on gifts. We have an important day around the same time, Aabita-biboon or the Midwinter (Ojibwe New Year). Maybe we should build up new holiday traditions around that?

Biboon is the Anishinaabe word for winter. Part of the word, *Boon*, means 'stop,' a gentle reminder from nature to pause & recharge. Just as the land rests under a blanket of snow, we too need this time to reflect, restore & renew. ❄️✨

How do you take time to rest and recharge during the winter? 💙
