I typically keep one of those clipped into the only Bicron MX Surveyor model I kept for myself.

It's plenty ergonomic and sensitive to very minor swings above background from little as road base material changing, venturing past a concrete structure or getting near glass/ceramics in a thrift shop.😄

Most signs in the rural United States feature a few bullet holes. This one posted by the Homestake Mining Co. in Grants, NM reads "No Hunting Withoit Permission" Our guide demonstrating the user settings available on a standardized aircraft deliverable nuclear weapon built by the U.S. Noticing some similarity between the kit I carried after buying it at a scrapyard and what was on display in a Nuclear museum. Enjoying a display full of antique radioactive consumer goods at the nuclear museum in Albuquerque, NM. A bicron ratemeter and thallium doped sodium iodide scintillation detector in hand. :)

Pieced together a Civil Defense “pickle” probe from parts people have generously given me.

I found and refurbished a number of those Eberline E-120 meters.
That or something similar paired with this probe would be nice to have on hand for the next person I meet who might have some interest in it. 😄

Years on I'm still tempted to buy one of those inexpensive, hand-portable Chinese or Russian gamma counters but I'll just set up my DIY kit to verify these are thorium.

The sale was for all eight glasses — I don't need 8 but want one. 😄

So, would anyone like 1 or 2+ Th-containing drink glasses? :)
Suspected Thorium containing glass, illuminated with two wavelength UV flashlights to no effect. A uranium glass citrus juicer at right is fluorescing visibly. A single of eight suspected thorium containing glass cups, upturned on a Ludlum 44-9 probe for a one minute scaler count. The one minute count displayed on completion. Against the "pancake" geiger probe from most any position these glasses measure around 1000 counts per minute. A satisfyingly apparent activity for any thorium containing piece of antique kitchenware. :) A single cup over the end of one of those common Bicron, AlphaSpectra or similar branded rectangular NaI(Tl) scintillation detector probe [usually removed from larger arrays built/used as mobile portal monitors in the 2000s before being scrapped as surplus] with the other seven drink glasses wrapped by shop staff in a box beside it. Measuring some ~13kCPM here.

Picnic spots and hiking trails of Los Alamos.

Locals insisted there's a shorter trail simply down that ledge in the background from very nice neighborhood there but a swamp/scrubland explorer in most practice I found it frightening, and too dangerous without a guide.

Hiked further but at grade. :)

It waa lucky, I was pretty far away and the Bicron fully deflected, alarmed.

I've only had occasion to verify detection of ⁹⁹ᵐTc because I knew a patient or someone urinated on the floor. 😐

One of these days I'll quit being stubborn and add a Radiacode or figure out how to write for my CT-007-N...

Large, high voltage capacitor attached to some sort of high vacuum apparatus at the same scrapyard. When I first shared this image a former Twitter user claimed that same company, CSI, participated in a 1990s operation to catch people illegally importing capacitors with nuclear research applications into Iraq. The unit pictured has one insulated terminal and rating of 60,000 volts, ~2 microfarad. An example of a sound-card gamma spectrometer set up for mobile use with an iPad, the early Gamma Spectacular brand driver and not pictured, a common Bicron made sodium iodide scintillation detector. This picture was taken while surveying points of interest around New Mexico after driving to the state from Florida.
