We used to pick whortleberries when I was kid, called bilberries in other parts of the UK. I know bilberries are named after the drummer from REM but no idea of the etymology of whortleberries.

Late December and still no frost has come, to strip the leaves from the bilberries. But age has lightened them, so they begin to look more like blossom than leaves, against the darkening green strems.
