What business opportunities can #BioCCS create?

At #EBF2026, Christian Holzleitner from the EU Commission's DG CLIMA will explore the emerging opportunities for BioCCS in the EU's evolving carbon removals framework.

Europe is funding its removal rulebook and calling it broken at the same time. The Commission steers a €12M Horizon Europe carbon farming call to align with the CRCF certification framework. Carbon Market Watch says the CRCF is ill-suited for BioCCS. Neither side names a cost per tonne.

Voss vs Collier in Europe: BioCCS bolts capture onto existing pulp mills and biomass plants, so tonnes arrive this decade. Tech-neutral procurement avoids locking in biomass demand. The actual gap is MRV: no EU standard yet makes a biogenic tonne and a geological tonne equal.
October 22, 2026 at 6:39 PM
What settles both debates is a common standard. A BioCCS tonne in Sweden, a tailings tonne in Ontario and a DAC tonne in Alberta must count the same way, or buyers pay for the cheapest paperwork, not the cheapest carbon. Watch EU certification rules and Canadian winter DAC data.

If the Commission gets its way, the targeted CDR would be restricted to the technologies bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BioCCS) and direct air CCS (DACCS).
October 20, 2026 at 6:45 AM
It became clear early on that the EU Commission’s proposal for the reform of the European Emissions Trading System (ETS 1) opens up a large funding gap between the foreseeable revenue intended to fund the procurement of CDR certificates and the price of BioCCS and DACCS.

🌍 Cutting emissions is essential. But climate neutrality will also require permanent carbon removals.

BioCCS and biochar can store biogenic carbon while sustainable bioenergy continues replacing fossil fuels.

I would think that the co-benefits from ERW & BioCCS via biochar as soil amendments and the fact that BECCS power plants can provide firm, clean electricity would be major selling points to help garner public support for them.

BioCCS energy news:

ADM & Tallgrass will be capturing and sequestering 800,000+ tons per year from bioethanol production over the next 15 years assuming that there are still people using ICE vehicles then. 🔌💡

We started in 2021 by connecting two things that already existed: thousands of biogas plants venting pure CO2, and companies that needed verified removal. No one was connecting them.

The European Commission could buy up to 6m tonnes a year of domestic carbon removals from 2031 as part of long-term climate commitments, an official said late on Thursday. montelnews.com/news/938bda1...
EC to buy annual 6m tonnes of CO2 removals from 2031 – official
EC plans to buy 5–6 Mt/yr of domestic CO2 removals from 2031, supporting BioCCS and DACCS and scaling purchases to ~48 Mt/yr by 2040 under ETS reforms.

Also significant was the role of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), which they call bioCCS or BECS!

The cement industry is emerging as one of the fastest growing industries that is installing Carbon Capture and Storage, but I believe that BioCCS is still the industry that is capturing the most CO2.

Do you know how much fossil fuel the Rosebank and the other field are expected to produce and when?

Harvesting crop stubble for use as a biofuel has to be done carefully in order to not reduce Soil Organic Carbon in farmlands. That's why I promote BioCCS power plants that produce biochar that can be added back into the soils. 🔌💡

One of my favorite JAMs (Joint Adaptation and Mitigation) are the BioCCS power plants that reduce catastrophic wildfire risk, produce electricity, and sequester carbon by producing the soil amendment, biochar.

Why am I so pro-BioCCS about these biochar power plants?

Nuke plants don't equester carbon.

This facility supplies renewable electricity and heat to 8,000 homes, demonstrating a scalable model that co-generates energy and high-durability carbon sink materials from regional forestry waste. 🔌💡

Oil extraction is an avenue to have the fossil fuel industry pay for some of the CCS infrastructure that needs to be constructed. Carbon taxes and emission caps will allow for us to end oil extraction as we approach closer to electrified economies.

Also, BioCCS is valuable for a number of reasons.

I can understand the frustration that geologic sequestration has been awarded access to this funding pool whereas biochar has not been, but biochar has it's own source of income on its own right so I'm fine with this.

It's good that BioCCS & DAC are supported. 🔌💡
