Loeske Kruuk was a world-leading evolutionary biologist, a wonderful person and a great friend. Her loss is devastating.

Happy #JellyfishDay! The oceans are increasingly full of these gelatinous invertebrates, provoking a range of responses in humans, from disgust to awe. The biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel was most certainly in the latter camp... https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/ernst-haeckels-jellyfish

One of the most dangerous things to ask a biologist.
hey biology bsky, i'm crowdsourcing for a slide in class. reply to this with your best attempt to succinctly but comprehensively define the concept of "species" in a single skeet.

hello i'm a voice actor biologist and actually they only do fun noises like this when they're very distressed,

An ocean biologist? There is no money in that!

Photo from my collection, and I actually have some interesting info about this lady. This is Mina Winslow in 1915. She was an accomplished biologist specializing in mollusks (malacology)! public.websites.umich.edu/~tfduda/pdf/...

I, a biologist, do my best to understand the connections among inflation, employment, interest rates, debt, and bond markets.

In my experience economists do not do the same with CO2 levels, ocean acidification, falling fish stocks, temperature, pollination failures, and resulting social conflict.
Scolding climate advocates for ignoring economic analysis is counterproductive: our analyses don’t capture the costs and benefits they care about. We should push for more cost-benefit thinking from a place of humility about what we can and can’t deliver: www.theargumentmag.com/p/what-econo...

9 years ago today, I received this amusingly-phrased email.

It led to a “dear shark man” write-in advice column on the blog, and eventually that led to my monthly “ask a marine biologist” column with SCUVA diving magazine.

Everyone knows about the Offspring singer also being a molecular biologist, but people sleep on James Blunt. It’s like if Stanislav Petrov had then decided to become Chris Isaak
You can read my full account of what actually happened at Pristina Airport below. It covers what Blunt's actual role in it was which is more conplex and, if anything, more impressive than the myths around that crisis actually make out.

(it also goes a long way to explain why Putin is how he is)
Pristina: An Airport too Far
In 1999, an incident at Pristina airport in Kosovo almost brought NATO into open conflict with Russia. This is how Michael Jackson (not that one) and James Blunt (that one) helped prevent a war.

That’s as good as I got I think. It’s my favorite biologist trap to ask this question anyways — a good one for docent hikes

We already did this, and you revealed you're lying about being a biologist.

Try to keep up.
Let me guess...

Next, you're going to pretend "gender" is a new concept and sex is binary, rather than a collection of bimodal traits.

When you’re a marine biologist who also does science communication work, your research gets cited in places most marine biology work does not get cited.

having a degree in biology does not make you a biologist
just like having a degree in biochemistry does not make you a biochemist; it means you took some classes, gathered some credits, and passed exams in a program for biology & biochemistry
