The beefiest tern in the world, Caspian Tern. Bigger than many gulls, with a pickaxe bills invariably described as "blood red." Brooklyn, NY, early October in the rain. This one's an immature. #birds #birding #terns #birdsnyc

White-winged Scoter just off the seawall literally underneath the Verrazano Narrows bridge yesterday for #birdsseenin2025. The closest I've ever been to one of these, frankly speaking, incredibly weird looking sea ducks. #birds #birding #birdsnyc

Rare in fall in NYC, rarer in spring, and most unlikely to spend the winter, this Clay-colored Sparrow is clinging on in this savage January weather in the farthest extremes of the wind-whipped Rockaways, near the beach, eating the last of the grass seeds. #birdsseenin2025 #birds #birding #birdsnyc

Classic urban #birding! That’s me enjoying point-blank views of a Y1 Glaucous Gull that is waiting for the next stale bread-crust handout to happen on a parking lot in south #Brooklyn. Photo courtesy of my man Jeff. #birds #birdsnyc #birdsseenin2024

Back in #birdsNYC I had Queens county's 6th ever record of Mississippi Kite, a common bird in the south but an ephemeral very low volume migrant in NYC, usually in the last week of May. On the 23rd I was in Forest Park and a strange combination of gull and raptor passed over a hole in the canopy.👉

Today I went out in foul weather scouting Xmas Bird Count rarities. In driving rain and a nasty easterly wind an exhausted young Black-legged Kittiwake was sitting on the Coney Island sand, only Brooklyn's 4th or 5th #ebird record, and my year bird #994! #birds #birding #birdsseenin2024 #birdsnyc

A rufous hummingbird visits a feeder in Prospect Park on Presidents’ Day. A vagrant from the West Coast, this is the first one recorded in Brooklyn. The incoming orange gorgets suggest it’s an immature male (2/19/2024) #birdsnyc #birds 🪶

Encountered a mixed flock of purple sandpipers & dunlin feeding on the wave-washed rocks of Governors Island. Fascinating how deftly they maneuvered around the crashing wakes of passing ships. #birds #birdsnyc 🪶

This fall’s most frequent greater NYC-area vagrant seems to be the Ash-throated flycatcher. At least half a dozen, including this one we found on a Linnaean Society walk in Shirley Chisholm State Park (11/18/2023) #birds #birdsnyc 🪶

Despite its name, Common Mergansers are rare around NYC. An recent incursion here likely due to frozen lakes & streams to the north. This one is hanging around Brooklyn #birds #birding #birdsNYC #birdphotography #ducks
