Do you know that much of the information we have today about migration routes, come from birdwatchers sightings?

Are there any birdwatchers out there who could tell me if members of the corvid family congregate in a way similar to a murmuration of starlings? I saw hundreds of birds (unsure if jackdaws or small crows) yesterday evening. Perhaps @rxnature.bsky.social or @carlbovisnature.bsky.social could help.

That would be a 3.5 mile round trip to the entrance path to Arne Moors. That's would be practical for some visitors, but not all. However, I can see many birdwatchers choosing to park closer. When there is a good rarity twitchers will park in Ridge or on the limited parking on Soldiers Road
They want people to park at Arne and walk there and back which possibly for some people is unrealistic. Ridge carpal is small and does not seem to be open much at the weekends. People will also park on heartland moor and walk which will create damage to heathland

From birdwatchers to scientists
Conservation isn’t only the work of scientists and decision makers. Across the world, a vast network of passionate volunteers collect data on wildlife, weather, water quality, and historical documents. In ornithology, this usually means recording bird observations – a practice known as “citizen science”. The importance of citizen science in conservation Tirelessly looking for and counting birds, birdwatchers from all around the world create datasets so large that they would be impossible for professional scientists to collect alone. Long-term datasets allow scientists to detect trends in bird population size, measure the impacts of climate change, and identify other threats. This provides valuable information on changes in migration timing, habitat degradation, and invasive species – data that indirectly feed into the EU Birds Directive reporting and the Red List, and that shapes where conservation funding and protection efforts are focused. This huge amount of information is collected through science platforms such as observation.org, eBird, BirdTrack, and iNaturalist, as well as identification tools like Merlin Bird ID. They give everyone access to an extensive database of bird photos, sounds, and other identification tools, extremely useful for spotting and recognizing birds. Observation.org alone logs 35 million records per year, with contributions from more...
