Her birth, like that of countless other enslaved individuals, marked the beginning of a life without freedom or control over her own destiny. The Maplewood plantation, situated in the rural heart of Kentucky, was one of many Southern estates where Black Americans were enslaved and forced into grueling labor, with little to no rights or protections.
