After a summer in which wildfires have burned across the Rhinogydd near Harlech, Blaenavon, Conwy Mountain and Llanwonno, and the whole of Wales was declared to be in drought, the case for restoring resilient ecosystems has rarely been clearer

Yesterday I visited the common land above Blaenavon that was devastated by wildfire over the summer.

Special thanks to our fire services, military, police, farmers and residents who manage the land and whose expertise is paramount. Now, we must build resilience for future fires.

From Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly to Blaenavon, communities have faced weeks of smoke, scorched hillsides, damaged habitats and fears that fires could reach homes.

So what caused this summer’s fires — and what can be done to prevent another?

Communities across the valleys have faced smoke, damaged landscapes, threatened homes and disruption — but what is driving the fires, and how can another summer like this be prevented?

This summer of wildfires and of homes being destroyed by fire is only the early stages of the chaos that is coming as we continue to pump more CO2 into the atmosphere for another 24 years if they stick to their promises.

The idea that planting trees will stop climate change is a fallacy. It's actually making the proble worse with wild fires burning all over the UK and Europe. At this stage we must concentrate on renewable energy and reliable carbon capture.

More than 75% of UK wetlands have been lost since 1700. As wildfire risk grows, restoring peatlands and wetlands could help landscapes retain water and slow the spread of fire.

Over 75% of UK wetlands have been destroyed – restoring them would help prevent wildfires
Restoring Britain’s lost wetlands could reduce wildfire risk as the Blaenavon blaze exposes how degraded peatlands can intensify fires during prolonged hot, dry weather.
