A knocker-up woke people for work by tapping on their windows with a long stick. In some pockets of industrial England the job lasted until the early 1970s.

At Tallow Reach, the harbour in my stories, the pilot wakes the ferry lad, tapping on his window with a boathook on her way down.

16 Oct 1905 // HM Submarine A.4 was taking part in signalling tests off Spithead with hull fully awash when water entered via an open ventilator, through which a flag attached to a boathook was being extended. Very quickly the boat lost trim and began to sink in a steep nose-down attitude.

what I need is for someone to come over and pull the bones out of my body with a boathook

Seen a man try to lift a punt with a boathook once. Valuable. You learn the shape of wrong just as clear as the shape of right.

FUCK. The sailors of the RNLI risk their lives every day so others might live. What the fuck is wrong with these people?

Someone needs a boathook across the head. They do the same as I did, and are my brothers. I see some asses in need of kicking.

Those two were constantly trying to kill each other. They had a boathook fight on the bow of the rig a few weeks later. Quite bloody 🤣

This week we took a quick trip Lake Washington to calibrate an echosounder for deployment this summer. A tungsten carbide sphere was dangled below the boat and moved around in the “beams” produced by the transducers. Stay tuned for cruise updates in August! 🌊🚢🧪

“Boathook? Hubcap? What sort if names are these?”
“Shark Names.
It’s our way of saying what we’re most proud of eating”
“I can see why you’d be wary of a shark that had eaten a boathook, But Hubcap?”
“It was still on the car when he ate it”
“OH…”
“And so ‘Big Al’ ate…”
“NAh, Its because he’s Big.”

“Thank You my good man.
BoatHook, Hubcap - Go make sure they’re got everything sorted. Me and Big Al will let the organisers know we’re here.”
“Boss”
“JUst ONCE It’d be nice for one of you guys to to have an issues.
I mean; 4 great white sharks turn up and the only one that ever has issues is me?”

“Not this bullshit again.
Look Here, See the case my colleague Boathook is carrying? The small one?
THAT is a violin case.
What my other colleague Big Al is carrying is in point of fact a VIOLA case, Which differs from a violin in several impor- Ok. Let me put it this way;

During the voyage, he fell overboard during a storm and was almost lost at sea but managed to grab hold of the topsail halyards, giving the crew enough time to rescue him with a boathook.

Frazer, Pike and Godfrey. The idea of Frazer going Pearl Fishing tickles me no end. Bearing in mind he got disciplined in naval service for belting a superior office with a boathook, anything's possible.
