If #Harvard is being attacked because it’s too woke, too D.E.I., too antisemitic, and too liberal, shouldn’t we also be going after #BobJonesUniversity for being too close minded, too homogeneous, unequal, & exclusive, too just one religion with zero Jewish studies, and too conservative?

It’s funny how critical #BobJonesUniversity is of Catholicism when they participate in the same harmful practices re: sexual abuse.

IndoctriNation - Klandamentalism with Camille Lewis
In this episode, Camille Lewis, an assistant professor of Communication Studies at Furman University, discusses her latest book, 'Klandamentalism.’ Camille, who spent 15 years researching the book, uncovers the deep connections between Bob Jones University and white supremacist ideology, including ties to the Ku Klux Klan. The conversation spans Lewis's personal journey through fundamentalist Christianity, her academic career, the challenges she faced at Bob Jones University, and how she has used her research to uncover hidden histories. This episode also goes into broader themes of how high-control groups operate, the intersection of religion and racism, and the importance of autonomy and truth in scholarship. DEBATE: Is Hell Biblical? Ex-Evangelical Pastor Brings Receipts (ft. Brian Recker)
Brian Recker is a former Evangelical Pastor who spent about eight years in ministry before stepping away from traditional evangelicalism. He grew up as the son of a Baptist preacher and attended the fundamentalist Bob Jones University. Instead of pastoring a local church in the traditional sense, Brian now speaks, writes, and teaches about a more inclusive, love-centered Christian spirituality. By removing pun*shment from Christianity’s center, Brian boldly reimagines the core questions of faith, such as why Jesus lived and d*ed, and what it means to be “saved.” He emphasizes following Jesus without fear of hell, and focuses on compassion, empathy, and justice in spiritual life. From Silence to Protest: Do Right BJU w/ Chris Peterman
In this episode, host Andrew Pledger interviews Chris Peterman, a Bob Jones University alum and activist who led the Do Right BJU movement. Chris shares his experiences growing up in fundamentalist Christian environments, his realization of his sexual identity, and his awakening to the problems within these institutions, particularly around issues of abuse. The episode delves into Chris's journey from being a conforming student to founding a movement that demanded accountability from Bob Jones University. They discuss the steps leading to the first student-led protest at BJU, the significant impact of the Do Right BJU movement, and the subsequent Grace Report that investigated the university's handling of abuse claims. Andrew Pledger – Cult Survivor, Coach & Content Creator Interviewed 12-01-2022 https://moxietalk.com/episodes/ ABOUT ANDREW PLEDGER BIOGRAPHY & FULL-LENGTH EPISODE In the beginning, long before he was born, his parents were both devout fundamentalist Christians. His maternal grandparents raised his Mother as a Methodist until they converted to fundamentalist Christianity. His paternal grandmother was a fundamentalist Christian, and his grandpa eventually converted. Andrew's parents met at Hyles-Anderson College in the late 1980s; Hyles-Anderson is known for being a strict fundamentalist school. His Father studied to be a pastor & his mother was going to be an English teacher. They got married in the early 90s & were excited to have children, but had difficulties & after contemplating adoption, they prayed about it until it finally happened! They had three boys, and Andrew was the middle child. They interpreted the birth of their children as a prayer answered & dedicated their children to the God of Christianity. Homeschooling was popular among fundamentalist Christians because of the separation from the world, outside influences, & total control of their children's lives. Andrew grew up in the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement known as the IFB cult at Gospel Light Baptist Church in Walkertown, NC, pastored by Bobby Robertson until 2018. Robertson was called "America's Pastor," & Gospel Light is one of the larger IFB churches in the U.S. It is known for its extensive bus ministry, bringing in thousands of kids every week. His trust in his parents eroded and was forever destroyed; he read books constantly to expand his mind and overcome "black-and-white thinking." Today, Andrew is an influencer who brings awareness to religious trauma and has shared his story on many podcasts. As of this filming, he works for one of the world's top cult experts, Rachel Bernstein, and helps her with her social media marketing for her podcast, "IndoctriNation." Andrew is on a mission to pursue psychology to become a therapist & eventually, a psychologist by researching religious trauma & helping present & future survivors of spiritual abuse! Chapel Probation s5- Rick Pidcock- BJU to Empathy and Fatherhood
We are back at Bob Jones University, or BJU, with Rick Pidcock. Rick is a writer with Baptist News Global, and he has come a long way from those bizarre, high-control days of BJU. He tells his story of finding his way to being an empathetic human being in stark contrast with the uncaring theobro culture of BJU and how he became a stay-at-home dad, like Scott. And we finish with a last look at the deconstruction world, namely the White men who become influencer/pastors. EXTRA: Five Facts BJU Does Not Want You To Know w/ Dr. Camille Lewis - from Beyond BJU Podcast
Listen to Beyond BJU HEREDr. Camille Lewis attended BJU in the 90s, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees. She joined the faculty at BJU and completed her Ph.D. from Indiana University. In 2007, she left BJU after being given an ultimatum: either resign or permit the BJU daycare to spank her 2-year-old son. She chose her son. In this episode, she shares five facts BJU does not want you to know. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. She holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University in Rhetorical Studies with a minor in American Studies. Her book, 'Romancing the Difference: Kenneth Burke, Bob Jones University, and the Rhetoric of Religious Fundamentalism', was a scholarly attempt to stretch the boundaries of both Kenneth Burke’s rhetorical theory on tragedy and comedy as well as stretch conservative evangelical’s separatist frames. Her second book, 'White Nationalism and Faith: Statements and Counter-Statements', tracks the religious arguments for and against white nationalism in America since the Civil War. She is currently working on a book entitled Klandamentalism. After nearly twenty years in the classroom, Camille is thrilled to be teaching Rhetoric & Strategy, Argumentation, Rhetorical Criticism, Great Speeches, and Public Speaking at Furman. Going Broke for God
Today we are joined by Andrew Pledger to talk about the financial burden that going to a religious college/university can cause. We get into not only the cost of these institutions but the extended control they have over all aspects of someone’s life, even when it’s the time in life where you’re developmentally ready to have more freedom. Andrew shares his story with us about how he chose to go to Bob Jones University, what was required when he got there, the rules he had to follow and the financial consequences he had when he didn’t follow the rules. To follow Andrew or learn more about his work, go to: @andrewpledgerwrites on Instagram Check out his podcast series “Surviving Bob Jones University” wherever you listen to podcasts! All of Andrew’s links and projects can be found hereTo learn more about the support groups offered at the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery or to sign up, click hereThis podcast is brought to you by the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery: an online trauma coaching company whose practitioners are trauma informed and trauma trained to work with individuals, couples and families who have experienced high control religion, cults, and religious trauma.
