Abortion bans are a violation of the separation of church and state.

So are book bans. So are anti-LGBT laws. So are school vouchers.

Notice a pattern?

I thought you should know that in 2024 New Jersey, Minnesota, Illinois, California, and Maryland have all enacted legislation that bans book bans & censorship in both, school and public libraries, and protects librarians.

Journalist Katie Phang shared a powerful video about the rising tide of book bans—including the banning of They Called Us Enemy in Tennessee. I’m honored she included my story in this important conversation. We cannot let these book bans stop us from telling our stories and histories.

Recently, my book THEY CALLED US ENEMY was banned – again – in Tennessee. Book bans are out of control. Huge parts of American history are being restricted. To join me in standing up for the freedom to read, go to pen.org/action. @penamerica.bsky.social @topshelfcomix.bsky.social @idwpublishing.com

Nearly 12,000 book bans took place in schools over the past year.

Here in Illinois, we were the first to fight back and ban those very book bans.

We stand for free expression, diverse ideas, and the right to see ourselves in the books we read.

Florida bans "The Diary of Anne Frank" in school libraries. Whoever made this decision should have to eat every page of that amazing book, page by page.

Texas voters just sent the book banners packing. Not in California. Not in New York. In Texas. Across the state, voters went to the polls and threw out right-wing school board members who built their local political brands on book bans, anti-LGBTQ policies and Christian nationalist culture-war panic
